Making a platform for a bed is a project you can complete with limited building skills, a few tools and necessary materials. You can find everything you need at your local home improvement supply store. Most home improvement stores will cut your materials to size for you at no additional charge, so you only need to assemble the platform for your bed. The materials are designed to make a platform for a full size bed with a two inch rim around the perimeter. You can adjust the wood sizes as needed for your mattress.
Things You'll Need
- 5 boards, 56 inches by 8 inches by 2 inches
- 2 boards, 77 inches by 8 inches by 2 inches
- 10 "L" brackets
- Drill & drill bit
- Wood screws & screw driver
- Measuring tape
- ¾ inch thick sheet of plywood 56 inches by 77 inches
- Decorative trim, 2 pieces 56 inches & 2 pieces 77 inches
- Light grade sandpaper
- Stain or primer and paint
- Sponge or brush and tray
Place an "L" bracket at the end of one of the 77 inch boards, in the center. Mark the spots where the screws will be placed and drill pilot holes. This will make it easier to insert the screws into the wood boards. Attach the "L" bracket with screws.
Place a 56 inch board flush against the 77 inch board and the "L" bracket. Mark the spots for the screws and drill pilot holes. Attach the 56 inch board to the "L" bracket on the 77 inch board.
Repeat this process as you attach another 56 inch board to the opposite end of the 77 inch board. You will now have three sides of your platform joined together.
Measure 15 inches from the corner along the inside of the 77 inch board and attach an "L" bracket. Remember to mark and drill pilot holes first. Measure 15 inches from the "L" bracket and attach another "L" bracket.
Attach 56 inch boards to each of the three "L" brackets you just installed. Your frame now has three sides and three center boards. Attach "L" brackets to the open ends of the three 56 inch boards you just installed. Attach the remaining 77 inch board to the three "L" brackets.
Place the 56 by 77 inch sheet of plywood on top of your platform frame and attach it with screws all the way around the perimeter and along the three center braces. Remember to drill pilot holes before you insert the screws.
Attach decorative trim around the perimeter of the platform, along the top edge. Sand then stain or prime and paint your platform.
Tips & Warnings
- Add more inches to the width of your platform to create a bench on either side of your mattress.
