How to Make a Pennant Valance
A pennant valance is a very charming window treatment that puts custom window treatments within the reach of even a beginning sewer. This valance hangs down from the curtain rod in a series of triangles and looks especially charming in a kitchen or dining room window. The following instructions outline making a pennant valance from cloth napkins, though you can use any square piece of fabric. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Four cloth napkins
- Matching thread
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Curtain rod

1
Fold each napkin in half so that it makes a triangle with the backside of the napkin facing outward.
-
2
Lay the triangles side by side so that they overlap a bit at the top. How much or how little they overlap is completely up to you and may depend on the width of the window you are covering. Pin the triangles together both at the tip and at the top where they overlap.

-
3
Sew each triangle closed, starting at the tip and ending either 2 inches from the top, or just before it overlaps with the next triangle. Do not sew the triangles together.
-
4
Turn the triangles inside out so that the outside of the fabric is now visible. Hang them from the curtain rod one at a time by passing the rod through the opening at the top. You should not need to sew the multiple triangles together if you arrange them carefully on the rod so that they overlap as they did when you laid them out. Leaving them separate allows you to reuse the valance on a different-size window should you move.

Tips & Warnings
To dress up your valance a bit, consider hanging tassels or light-catching prisms from the points of the valance. To attach your triangles without sewing them together, use small safety pins on the back of the valance.
