Instructions

    • 1

When purchasing wine glasses to paint, choose ones that are sturdy and preferably clear. Practice on ones from a dollar store.

    • 2

Glass paints are available from most art supply or craft stores; be sure to purchase the liquid enamel type of paints, rather than the translucent glazes or tints. You will also need a pre-painting surface conditioner and a post-painting sealant, both of which are readily available--or purchase a kit that contains everything you need.

    • 3

Make sure the glass is clean, dry and smudge-free. Choose the area where you'd like your design to go, then paint on a layer of surface conditioner with a dry, clean brush and allow it to dry for one hour.

    • 4

Apply paint in your desired design over the conditioned area; if layering, be sure to let each layer dry before applying the next layer, and do not thin with water. Remember that the first layer you paint will be visible from the inside of your glass, so check to make sure it appears as you would like it to.

    • 5

Allow paints to dry for one hour, and then topcoat with clear gloss or satin glaze sealant. Apply two topcoats, allowing an hour of drying time between each coat. Do not wash your handpainted glass for 10 days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Handpainted glasses can be washed in a dishwasher, but it is not recommended. For finer details in your painting designs, use a toothpick wrapped in cotton to apply paint. Sign your initials on the bottom of the stem and start your own collectible gift line.

  • As with any paints, vapors are possible eye irritants, harmful if swallowed and may be flammable. Read all warnings and precautions on product packaging. Seek first aid and medical attention if eye contact occurs or if the paint is swallowed.
