How to Create APA Footnotes in MS Word

You're writing your big paper, and you need to put in information about a particular subject. The American Psychological Association (APA) style suggests against using footnotes in your work, particularly since footnotes are normally used for citations. Since APA style allows you to cite your information within your work's text, use it to add information about or explain a topic. Microsoft Word can often help you insert end notes with just a few clicks.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your cursor where you want the footnote to be, and click there.

    • 2

Click "Insert," then "Footnote" on the drop-down menus in Microsoft Word. This will place the number of your footnote at the end of your sentence, and create a space at the bottom of the page for additional information.

    • 3

Write your sentence, explaining the topic set off by your in-text footnote.

    • 4

Keep your footnote concise. If you need to explain more than can fit into a sentence, create another footnote.

    • 5

Make sure to cite any information in your footnote in a parentheses as you would in the main body.
