How to Dissolve Hot Glue

Hot glue is a multipurpose, adhesive problem-solver for all types of crafts and household projects. It has a very quick dry time and a very strong bond. Using hot glue speeds up the project time of many crafts.

Removing hot glue from some surfaces is as easy as peeling it away. Reheating the glue removes it from other types of surfaces. There are, however, some surfaces that are very difficult or too delicate to peel or reheat. There is an option, though--dissolve it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Removing the Glue

    • 1

First try peeling the glue away, if your item is not too delicate.

    • 2

If this doesn't work, try chilling the glue with a piece of ice or place it in the freezer so the glue becomes hardened and brittle. Once it is chilled, try to peel it away. Use this method only if your item can withstand the freezing temperature.

    • 3

If steps 1 and 2 did not work, use a solvent cleaner to dissolve the glue. Try a citrus-based solvent cleaner, which may be more environmentally friendly. Wear gloves and goggles and work in a well-ventilated space.

    • 4

Saturate the area with the solvent cleaner and let it sit for the time stated on the bottle. Agitate it (if this will not damage your item). Use a scraper, if necessary.

    • 5

Once all of the hot glue has been dissolved, clean the area according to the solvent cleaner's instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the solvent cleaner on a small area of hot glue to see how it works. Work in small sections.

  • Work in a well-ventilated area. Keep away from children.
