How to Throw a Dance Party for a Pre-Teen
A pre-teen dance party is a great way to celebrate a birthday or big achievement in your child's life. Hip music, delicious snacks and refreshing drinks are all sure to provide a good time, as they make up their own dance moves and share funny stories. A pre-teen dance party is also a great party option because it can be done on a limited budget and thrown together in a short amount of time. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Send out invites about a week before the party is to be thrown. Include the location, date, time (beginning and end) and an RSVP number. Invites can be purchased anywhere that greeting cards are sold.
-
2
Purchase snacks and drinks for the party based on how many guests you are expecting. This can be done in advance or on the day of the party--just keep in mind that you will need somewhere to store all the snacks and drinks if you purchase them far in advance. Ask your pre-teen what kinds of drinks and snacks they and their friends like. Chips and candy are the easiest kinds of snacks to prepare and serve because you can throw them in bowls on tables placed around the room.

3
Place drinks in a bucket filled with ice on the tables that hold the snacks. You don't have to put out all the drinks at the same time; just tell your pre-teen to refill the drink buckets periodically if they start to get empty. Canned pop and juice boxes are easy and convenient.
-
4
Set up your stereo in front of the area intended for dancing and put in the CDs or hook up the Mp3 player so it is ready to play. If you are working with CDs your pre-teen and her friends can change the CDs in the stereo themselves. If you are using an Mp3 player your pre-teen can create a playlist for her dance party ahead of time that features all the music she and her friends want to dance to.
-
5
Set up lights around the room with your pre-teen. Christmas lights, strobe lights, siren lights and colored light bulbs in lamps and overhead lights will all help add to the dance party feel.
-
6
Decorate with streamers, balloons and party banners.

Tips & Warnings
Check out your pre-teen's music selections before the party to make sure they are age appropriate; this will avoid angry parents calling you up about it later. If you don't have a sufficient stereo for the party, try to borrow one from a friend or find one that you can rent at Rent-A-Center. Lights and other party decorations can be found at the Oriental Trading Company website (see Resources below).
