How to Style Thick, Short Hair
Thick, short hair can be styled in a variety of ways that are flattering to the face and easy to maintain. Thick, short hair does take some upkeep in order to remain flat, not frizzy or out of control. Thick hair usually also has a lot of volume, so it's important to use styling products in order for it to maintain its desired shape and style. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Have hair cut into layers. For very thick hair, don't get a bob or single-layer haircut. This is not a flattering style for thick, short hair. Thick hair is very voluminous and usually looks much better when it's cut into layers (unless it's past the shoulders). Ask the stylist for layers so the hair will lay flatter and be easier to style.

Let hair air dry. For hair that has natural curl in it, let the hair air-dry once some styling products are put into it. Use a hair styling balm such as Redken curls and comb it through to make sure it's distributed evenly through hair.

Use a diffuser and curling iron. For hair that has some natural curl but also tends to be frizzy, using a diffuser can help. Apply some curling balm (as mentioned above) before drying. A diffuser is a finger-like attachment that attaches to the end of a hair dryer and separates the hot air so it's distributed more evenly and the hair isn't as frizzy. Then, to properly define curls, use a large-barrel curling iron (at least 3/4 inch in diameter).

Use a paddle brush and hair dryer. Apply straightening or frizz control mousse or balm. Clip the hair in sections and blow dry each section one at a time. For each section, a flat paddle brush can be used to spread out the hair and hold it in place while drying it with a hair dryer. This leaves the hair smooth, with a "blow out" look that would be given in a salon.

Straighten the hair with a straightening iron. Once hair has air-dried or been dried with a hair dryer, use a straightening iron to smooth and straighten the hair. Again, separate hair into sections with clips and separate sections into smaller pieces to use the iron on. Don't make these smaller sections too thick, or they won't straighten properly. Use a silicone spray to seal in the style when finished.
