Instructions

    • 1

Determine the dimensions of your desired pond. When doing so, make sure that there is at least a four-foot depth in some areas to provide a warm area for fish to dwell during freezing temperatures.

    • 2

When digging the hole for the liner, build earthen shelves on the side to not only provide shade for fish, but ledges to place aquatic plants that will help with aeration of the water and act as a natural filter.

    • 3

Place the liner into the hole surrounding it with rocks on an outward facing slope to prevent run off into the pond. Fill the pond.

    • 4

Place the strawberry pots into the bottom of the pond. This will give smaller fish places to hide from larger predators, as even the parents at times can become cannibalistic of their young.

    • 5

Place the pump into the pond with a sponge filter over it to ensure that no hatchlings get sucked into the filter. The venturi should be above the water, thereby drawing air into the water column.

    • 6

Pick the fish you desire to breed and further research the specifics of the species.

Tips & Warnings

  • The most desirable fish for a profit breeder are Koi.

  • It is at times a good idea to have a separate pond for the hatchlings to be moved to if dealing with carnivorous fish, such as cichlids who have been known to consume their own young.
