How to Make a Scrapbooking Desk
A scrapbooker needs space to work. You need to be able to place your project front and center while having all the necessary tools close at hand. Photos must be protected and easily accessible. A wide and long work area is ideal for spreading out paper, embellishments and a paper cutter. You can make a large scrapbooking desk in less than an hour.

1
Find a hollow core door or door slab at your local hardware store, thrift store or recycle shop. Select two filing cabinets that are equal in height. You may find them at a thrift store while shopping for the door.
-
2
Remove all hardware from the used door with a screwdriver. Bag the hardware for another project.
-
-
3
Clear an 8-foot long and 5-foot wide area. Clean the floor. Remove any artwork, photos and curtains on the wall that could get in the way or be damaged.
-
4
Place the two filing cabinets flush against the wall, 4 feet apart. If they must be away from the wall, measure and line them up exactly.
-
5
Place the door on top of the two filing cabinets. If there is an opening for the doorknob place it at the back of the desk. If this is the desk's permanent location you can choose to brace the door to the wall with shelf brackets or a piece of 2-by-4. Make sure to check for the level of the 2-by-4 against the level of the filing cabinets. Pre-drill holes after testing for studs behind the desk area. Screw a 3-foot piece of 2-by-4 to the wall horizontally then set the door on top of it and the cabinets. Follow manufacturer's instructions if using brackets.

6
Place your scrapbooking lamp on to the desk. Run the cord down through the doorknob opening in the back side of the desk top if there is one. Set a round cup or container in the hole for a pencil and tool holder.
-
7
Set up paper storage container on the back side of one corner of your desk. Use the filing cabinets for embellishment and album storage. Set a photo box in one of the cabinet drawers for easy access when working on a project.
-
8
Use a desk chair or stool to work at your desk. You can store more things under the desk top. Add a cloth around the door edge to hide away the materials under the desk. Use adhesive backed Velcro to attach cloth to the desk edge for easy access to materials below.

Tips & Warnings
You can set a pegboard piece on the wall to hold your frequently used tools. Slab and flush doors can be used. They are all smooth, contemporary interior doors with no trim.
Make sure you evenly balance weight on the top of your hollow core desk. If it is not secured with brackets it can tip up on one end if the weight is too heavy.
