A fishing rod with a spinning reel is a great way to go fishing. With a little time and practice, anyone can use this type of rod and reel. Knowing how to change the line on one of these reels is important, and easy to learn and do.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing line Telephone book Scissors
  1. Step 1

Place the spool of line label side up on the floor below a low table or chair.

  2. Step 2

Pass the line from the spool through a phone book placed on the table or chair. This will provide the proper tension to the line and help prevent line twist when casting.

  3. Step 3

Put the line through all of the guides on the fishing rod and pull an extra 1 1/2 feet of line through.

  4. Step 4

Tie a loop at the end of this 1 1/2 feet of line.

  5. Step 5

Pass the line back through this loop to form a second loop.

  6. Step 6

Place this second loop over the spool on your reel. Make sure the bail (the wire part of the reel) is open.

  7. Step 7

Close the bail and turn the reel handle a few times. If the line is winding on the spool, no changes are needed. If the line is just sliding around the spool, open the bail and take the line off the spool and turn it around, placing the loop in the opposite direction of the first attempt.

  8. Step 8

Continue winding line onto the reel until the spool is full to within 1/8 inch from the lip. Don't overfill; it'll cause a snarl in the line on the first cast.
