How to Build a Wooden Apple Crate
Apple crates are sturdy forms of storage made out of wood. They are also popular from a design standpoint because they give a room a rustic feel and can be part of the decor indoors or out. You can make an apple crate using wood trim you can purchase from a home improvement center. Only a minimum of woodworking skills are required.

Things You'll Need
- 1/4-inch x 2-inch plywood slats
- 1/2-inch x 1/2-inch square dowels
- Hacksaw
- Hammer
- Nails
- Tape measure
- Pencil

Cut four 24-inch long pieces from the square dowels. Use the hacksaw. Make your cuts as straight as possible.

Cut the rest of the square dowels. Cut four 12-inch long pieces from the square dowels and four 13-inch long pieces. Use the hacksaw here as well, and be careful to use a smooth, even sawing motion.

Nail two 24-inch long pieces to two 12-inch dowel pieces. The two long pieces should be parallel to each other, as should the two short pieces. They will form a rectangle when you are done. Use at least one nail for each point of attachment, and if they do not seem secure, use two. Do this with the other set of 12-inch and 24-inch dowels so that you have two rectangles when you are done.

Nail the four 13-inch pieces to the four inside corners of one frame. The 13-inch pieces should be perpendicular to the frame. Use at least two nails for each piece.

Nail the free ends of the four 13-inch pieces to the inside corner of the second frame. Use at least two nails on these ends as well.

Cut the slats for your apple crate. Cut fifteen 24-inch pieces from the plywood slats. Cut ten 12-inch pieces from the plywood slats. Use the hacksaw, and use even, smooth movements to get straight, even cuts.

Nail the plywood slats to the dowels on all four sides of the frame. Leave 1/4-inch space between each slat. Use two nails in each end of each slat, one in each corner.

Nail five 25-inch slats to the outside of the bottom of the frame. These can be directly adjacent to each other or they can have a slight gap. Just remember that if you include a gap, small things will fall through the bottom.

Tips & Warnings
Sand all your edges for a smoother look or if you have children in the house. You can stain your apple crate if you wish, and you should weather seal it if you are outside.
