Requirements for Insurance Agents in New Jersey

New Jersey requires its insurance agents to have state licensure. This entails passing a series of insurance exams. New Jersey insurance agents must also maintain their licensure by taking continuing education courses.

Instructions

    • 1

Study the licensure requirements in New Jersey. If you are licensed by another state, you still have to fulfill New Jersey's requirements. However, if you're applying for a resident insurance producer license (as a resident of New Jersey), you have to complete educational and examination requirements.

    • 2

Fulfill New Jersey's prelicensing requirements for insurance agents. These requirements include a minimum number of classroom hours, including 20 hours of the following types of insurance: health insurance, life insurance, property insurance, and casualty insurance. See Resources for a link to the full list of required hours. You can take your courses at an insurance education provider, such as the Walsh School of Insurance.

    • 3

Take the licensing exams that New Jersey requires for each type of insurance you want to sell. For instance, if you want to sell auto insurance, you have to take an exam in property and casualty insurance. If you want to sell health insurance, you have to take the life and health insurance exam.

    • 4

Apply for the Initial Individual Producer License Application. Apply only after you have successfully passed your exams.

    • 5

Fulfill continuing education requirements after you have obtained your initial New Jersey license. You must fulfill 24 credits of continuing education every two years. These continuing education courses often include insurance laws, insurance ethics, and finance. You can often fulfill your requirements at the same New Jersey insurance education provider you attended for your prelicensing courses.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're not from New Jersey, and have licensure from another state, New Jersey allows you to apply for a nonresident license. You can apply for it online at New Jersey's state website (see Resources for a link). You can take practice exams for each of the major types of insurance. Take them online at the second link below.

  • In New Jersey, you have to pay an examination fee of $60 for each exam you take.
