Simple Gazebo Over a Spa

Styrofoam is a synthetic substance that is commonly used as a packing material. Styrofoam is both solid and light. Available in blocks, sheets, and chips, it can be re-assembled in numerous shapes. Styrofoam can even furnish a convenient building material for temporary structures. A children's playhouse or a gazebo can be built quickly out of pieces of Styrofoam.

Things You'll Need

  • Styrofoam blocks
  • Styrofoam sheets or boards
  • Scotch tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut Styrofoam blocks into the shape of bricks. The bricks can be any size, just as long as they are evenly proportioned.

    • 2

Pile one Styrofoam block on top of another to form a column. Tape each block to the one below. Continue adding blocks until you have reached the desired height for your gazebo.

    • 3

Make three more columns of Styrofoam blocks. The four columns should together form a square or a circle. Each of the columns should be evenly spaced.

    • 4

Place a large sheet of Styrofoam, or a Styrofoam board, over the tops of all four columns. Smaller sheets or boards can be taped together.

    • 5

Secure the roof to the tops of the columns either with tape or by placing a weight on top of the roof at a point directly on top of each column. Using a weight instead of tape will make your roof removable. That way you can take your Styrofoam gazebo apart and re-assemble it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different shapes and designs. A Styrofoam gazebo can be octagonal or hexagonal. It can even take the form of a trapezoid. Unusual columns might be created by allowing alternating blocks to stick out a little bit beyond the ones above and below. You can also paint the Styrofoam.

  • Make sure your Styrofoam gazebo is stable. Use blocks that are wide enough to support a column of the desired height. For large roofs, use sheets of Styrofoam rather than boards. The sheets will span larger distances without requiring additional support from underneath.
