How to Make a Macrame Keychain

Macrame as a craft is increasing in popularity again after a lull in the interest of the art. During the 60's and 70's, Macrame had almost as large a following as crochet or quilting. Many are returning to the craft as new and unique designs are created. A macrame key chain is not a new design; however, it is a quick and easy project for a beginner.

Things You'll Need

• 2" Keyring
• 3' Macrame yarn (polypropylene or natural jute)
• Macrame board
• T pins
• Scissors
• 16mm Wooden or ceramic bead

Instructions

1. Cut the cord into two 16-inch lengths.

2. Fold both cords in half and pull through the key ring. You should have four lengths hanging from the key ring in approximately equal lengths.

3. 

   Make a square knot using the two outside cords, over the two middle cords. See image. Tighten the knot up against the key ring.

4. 

   Repeat step 3 until you reach the desired length for your key chain. This is called a square knot sinnet.

5. 

   Thread the two middle cords through the bead. Slide the bead tightly up against the square knot sinnet. With the outside left and outside right cords, make a square knot tightly underneath the bead to hold the bead in place.

6. 

   Gather all cords together and place an overhand knot tightly up against the square knot under the bead. Cut the remaining cord to a desired length.

Tips & Warnings

• Add increasing larger beads throughout the key chain. This makes a great defensive weapon!
