If you always thought that you had to purchase a special kit to cover buttons with pretty fabric, here is good news. You can cover even the ugliest button with a scrap of pretty fabric and use these buttons in sewing or crafting projects. The covering method is easy, and it only takes minutes to cover a button.

This is an economical option for making attractive buttons to go with every project without having to spend money on expensive, matching buttons.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small piece of fabric
  • Button (any size, with or without shank)
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery floss (complimentary color to fabric)
  • Needle
  • Tape measure
  • Fabric pen
  1. Step 1

Measure the distance from the center to the outer edge of the button.

  2. Step 2

Lay the fabric scrap onto your work surface with the wrong side facing up.

  3. Step 3

Position the button upside down onto the center of the fabric scrap.

  4. Step 4

Measure the distance measured in Step 1 out from the edge point of the button, and place a small mark onto the fabric with the fabric pen.

Repeat several more times at different angles from the button.

  5. Step 5

Connect the marks made in Step 4 to draw a circle around the button with the fabric pen. Remove the button from the fabric for now.

  6. Step 6

Cut out the circle drawn in Step 5.

  7. Step 7

Thread the needle with a 10-inch length of embroidery floss. Sew around the outer edge of the fabric circle. Do not knot or clip the thread yet.

  8. Step 8

Position the button wrong side up in the center of the wrong side of the fabric circle.

  9. Step 9

Pull the ends of embroidery floss to pull the fabric circle around to the back of the button.

  10. Step 10

Knot the embroidery floss to secure the fabric circle around the back of the button. Clip the excess floss.

  11. Step 11

Check to make sure that if there is a shank on your button it is not blocked by fabric.

  12. Step 12

Sew your button to your project either with the button shank or through the holes of the button.
