Install RAM in Dell Inspiron 5000E

Installing memory in other laptops is tedious because of the tight space you have to work in as you gently maneuver the delicate component into place. The Dell Inspiron 5000e's open layout makes installing memory straightforward. The Dell Inspiron 5000e's case has quick release paneling for components such as the CD drive, optional bay and hard drive. This design makes it easy to work on the laptop because you can switch out most of its components without having to take the laptop completely apart.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Working PC100/PC133 Laptop Memory
  1. Step 1

Detach all cables from the laptop and lay the laptop down on its top with the left side facing up. Take the battery out of the laptop.

  2. Step 2

Locate the larger of the two covers on the bottom, which covers the memory. Unscrew and remove the cover for the memory.

  3. Step 3

Gently pull the tabs for the memory slot apart if there is a memory card already in the slot. Pulling the tabs apart will flip the memory card up at a 45 degree angle. Slide the card out. Repeat with the other memory card you are replacing.

  4. Step 4

Place the new memory card into the first memory slot at a 45 degree angle. It is keyed to fit into the slot in only one direction, so if it doesn't slide in smoothly, turn the card around and try again to slide it in. Once the memory is snug, push down gently until the metal clips lock into place.

  5. Step 5

Take the other memory card and repeat step 4 in the other memory slot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Laptop memory on this laptop needs to be PC100 or PC133 speed. These cards are designed to help your laptop reach optimal speed.
  • The memory card's memory pins are delicate. Excessive pressure will damage the pins, so do not force the card into the memory slot. If you accidentally break the pins off in the motherboard's memory slot, you will have to replace the motherboard.
