Quilted jacket made from sweatshirt

The most fun thing about making a jacket from a sweatshirt is that it will be an original creation that no one else has. You can combine colors and patterns that you alone find appealing, so the jacket will reflect your taste. It costs so little to make; you can make several jackets using different colors and patterns.

Things You'll Need

  • Sweatshirt
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk
  • Fabric scissors
  • Coordinating colors and patterns of fabric. Make certain the fabric will not fade on the sweatshirt when washed by prewashing the fabric.
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand needle and thimble

Instructions

    • 1

Measure carefully from one shoulder of the sweatshirt to the other to find the exact center of the sweatshirt's front. Mark with chalk.

    • 2

Draw the chalk line from the neck to the bottom of the sweatshirt. Cut the sweatshirt down the middle creating a jacket.

    • 3

Cut fabric pieces in any shape or design you find appealing. Sew these patches to the body of the sweatshirt either by hand or by machine anywhere on the jacket you wish and in any order you wish. The only rule is that you like the way it looks. Quilt where desired, and finish the fabric edges with an embroidery stitch done either by machine or by hand.

    • 4

Cut two 4-inch wide strips of fabric the length of the front of the jacket. Press under the raw edges (1/4 inch) of both sides of each strip with an iron at the proper setting for the fabric. Fold each fabric strip in half over each edge of the jacket's front opening. This is the trim. Pin down and sew down on the sewing machine or by hand with a slip stitch.

    • 5

Cut two more 4-inch strips of fabric to put around the neck and around the bottom of the jacket. Again as for the front trim, fold and press under the raw edges. Then fold each strip in half around the neck and around the bottom. Pin the trim down and sew it on the sewing machine or by hand with a slip stitch.

    • 6

Cut two more strips to fit around the cuffs of the jacket. Fold and iron under the raw edges. Fold the strips in half over each cuff. Sew them both on to finish the jacket. Iron all the trim for a pressed, finished look.
