How to Design an Embroidered Patch

An embroidered patch is a good way to create a uniform look for members of sports or martial arts teams. They help make different sections or members of a large group stand out, and they can also be awarded as special recognition--much like the patches that Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts earn for completing certain tasks. Before any patch becomes a reality, you have to design it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a shape and size for your embroidered patch. Some common shapes are circles, ovals, triangles and squares, but almost anything is possible. Its size typically ranges from about 1 1/2 inch to more than 10 inches, and depends on where you intend to apply the patch and how much detail you intend to include in it.

    • 2

Select a background color for your patch. Take into account the color of the surface to which you'll apply the patch, if known.

    • 3

Draw the basic shape of the patch on a sheet of paper, then sketch in the design you'd like included on the patch. Note what color or colors the design should be, and take careful note of how much of the patch it covers. Make sure to leave space for any lettering you may want included.

    • 4

Add any letters and numbers you want included on the patch. Adjust size, shape and scale as necessary until all the elements you want are included in the patch.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need super-small letters or fine details, you might want to look into purchasing a woven patch instead of an embroidered one.
