How to Pick a Good LCD TV

LCD stands for "liquid crystal display," which describes how LCD TVs show their images. The liquid crystal is pressed between two pieces of clear material and then lit from behind. This differs from a plasma screen TV which illuminate tiny plasma cells full of neon-xenon gas. LCD TVs are widely considered the wave of the future, so purchasing one is a good long-term option. When deciding on one, keep a few quality control issues in mind before making your purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you intend to place the LCD TV. This includes in height and width for the entire TV, not just the screen. You should also factor in the amount of space you have in the whole room (you should always sit a distance of 2 to 3 times the diagonal width of the LCD TV) and whether the TV stand or mount is sturdy enough to support the size of LCD TV you want.

    • 2

Decide how detailed you want your image to be. Not all LCD TVs are HDTV capable and those that are use different levels of pixilation. The optimum level is 1080p, which provides the sharpest image currently available. Beneath that is 1080i, and beneath that is 720p. LCDs offering 1080p resolution are more expensive, of course, but the resulting image will be sharper.

If brightness is an issue, consider the benefits of a smaller LCD TV versus a larger one. Smaller screen size generally results in a brighter image.

    • 4

Check the potential glare in the area you have chosen. If you have a large window opposite the TV or lights which reflect on the space you have set aside for the TV, it may result in glare on the screen. Some LCD TVs come with an anti-glare coating that helps to reduce such problems. If you watch TV in an area with a lot of windows, consider a model with such an option.

    • 5

Determine how many accessories you want to plug into your LCD TV. Most models offer a number of different connection options, allowing you to hook up a home theater system, DVD player , stereo system and other components directly to your set. Make sure the LCD TV has enough outlets to support all of your connection and more importantly, that those connections are compatible with the component for which they are intended.

Determine if you want to use a computer with your LCD TV. Many models come equipped with computer outlets which let you use your TV as a display for your computer. If you want this option on your set, make sure the ports work with your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you've determined which LCD TV you want to buy, it's a good idea to do some comparison shopping. Some outlets may offer the same brand for much less money.

  • Always make sure your LCD has a decent owner's warranty that will allow you to return or exchange it if there are problems. Even a good working TV may not be right for your needs and a warranty will protect you from having to shell out any additional money.
