How to Hit Down on a Golf Ball

Whether you are an experienced golfer or new to the game, few things in life are as frustrating and, at times, counter-intuitive as hitting a golf ball long and far (not to mention straight). In order to generate lift on the ball, you need to hit down on it. Don't go with your instincts here. Instead, try these simple steps to improve your golf game.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your position behind the ball and determine your line and ultimate target.

    • 2

Grip the club loosely with your right hand and tighter with the left (if you're a right-handed golfer).

    • 3

Take your practice swing, visualizing the target on the ball sitting between 2 and 3 o'clock on the back of the ball.

    • 4

Place your feet in position with your left foot slightly pointing out to the target and your right foot comfortably in line with the back of the ball. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart.

    • 5

Pull the club back and thrust it forward from the top point. As you hit the ball, the point of contact is above the equator of the ball. You will still have downward momentum as you complete the swing and follow through to your back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your eye on the contact point through the entire swing.
