How to Take Measurements for a Vinyl Replacement Window

A way to both update your home and increase its efficiency is to replace your existing single-pane windows with double-pane vinyl replacement windows. Not only are they easier to open, close and clean, but they will help keep cool air in during the summer months and warm air in during winter. Inaccurate measurements, however, will result in replacement vinyl windows that don't fit and are just as inefficient as your former windows. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Begin by measuring the width of your existing windows. Measure from left to right between the 2 insides of the window jamb, starting at the top. Write down this measurement, then move to the middle of the window and repeat. Write this down, then repeat once more at the bottom inside of the window jamb. Choose the narrowest width and circle it.

    • 2

Find the height by measuring from the left bottom of the overhead jamb to the left top of the sill; write down this measurement. Repeat in the middle, then the right, noting each measurement. Circle the shortest measurement.

    • 3

The final measurements you'll take to the store are the shortest height by the narrowest width, or the measurements you circled above. This will result in a snug fit for the replacement windows and ensure their advertised efficiency is maximized in your home.

Tips & Warnings

  • When choosing replacement vinyl windows, choose ones with an ENERGY STAR rating and talk to professionals to choose the best windows to fit your home and budget.

  • It's helpful to have an assistant hold one end of the tape measure to ensure you measure accurately between the jambs. Make sure your tape measure touches each window jamb, otherwise your measurement will be off and your replacement windows won't fit snugly, or worse, might not fit at all.
