Make a feather mask for Mardi Gras or a masquerade ball.

Celebrate Mardi Gras or add a dash of pizzazz to a costume by making a feather masquerade mask. Purchase a plain, inexpensive eye mask at almost any craft store. From there, you can embellishment it with a wide variety of craft items and adorn it with colorful feathers. The mask can be kept in place with a thin strap of elastic across the back of your head or be held in your hand on a wand.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eye mask
  • Feathers
  • Hot glue and glue gun
  • Craft embellishments
  • ¼-inch wooden or plastic dowel (optional)
  1. Step 1

Plan the design of your mask. Consider whether you will leave most of the mask plain or embellish it. A large feather plume at the top center or on one side is eye-catching.

  2. Step 2

Apply paint and embellishments, if desired. Consider gluing on sequins, painting oversized eyelashes around the eye openings or making swirling loops with glue and then applying glitter over the glue. Gluing multi-colored ribbons that stream down the sides of the mask is another option.

  3. Step 3

Allow paint and/or glue to dry, and then use hot glue to apply feathers. If the feathers you use have quills, cover the ends with smaller, downy feathers.

  4. Step 4

If your mask will have a wand, cut a wooden or plastic dowel to 16 inches. Paint or wrap with ribbon.

  5. Step 5

Attach the wand to one side of the mask with hot glue. Consider which hand you will use to hold the mask when deciding where to place the wand.
