If your child's birthday party is an ocean, beach or dolphin theme, invite this friendly dolphin piñata to the party. Children love piñatas at a birthday party. Fill the piñata with candy and treats and make a game of the children taking turns trying to break open the piñata to release the treats. You'll need to find an oblong balloon to use as the base of this dolphin piñata.
Step 1
Combine flour and water in a bowl. Blend well.

Step 2
Cut newspapers into strips.
Step 3
Inflate a long narrow balloon.
Step 4
Dip a strip of newspaper into the flour glue solution and wipe the excess liquid from the strip.
Step 5
Lay the strip on the balloon. Rub your fingertips over the newspaper to smooth down. Repeat with another strip, laying in a crisscross pattern.
Step 6
Cover the entire balloon. Leave a small area uncovered on one side of the balloon, which will be the top of the pinata. This will be where the candy will be inserted into the finished pinata. After the entire balloon is covered, allow to dry. Give it another coat of newspaper strips, and let dry. Give it a third coat of newspaper strips; allow to dry.
Step 7
Cut three fins from cardboard--two single fins and one double fin. Use the masking tape to secure the double-tail fin to one end of the balloon. Tape one single fin to the top of the balloon, in the center. Tape one single fin on the belly of the balloon, almost in the center, but slightly toward the nose of the dolphin. Note the image included with this step for the desired shape of the fins.
Step 8
Add newspaper strips to build up the nose area of the dolphin and to add a curved forehead. Note the image included with this step for the desired shape. First dip the newspaper strips in the flour solution. Allow to dry before proceeding to the next step.
Step 9
Secure the cord around the belly of the dolphin and create two loops on top; later these loops will be used for hanging the pinata. Cover the cord (not the loops) with masking tape to secure to the pinata.
Step 10
Repeat Steps 4 to 6, giving the pinata three more layers of newspaper strips. Allow to dry between each layer. Cover the entire pinata, except the cord loops on top and the area to insert the candy.
Step 11
Paint the pinata when the last layer of newspaper is completely dry. Paint the belly a lighter color than the body and fins. Use black paint or a black marker to draw in the mouth and eyes. Insert the candy through the opening on top, before hanging from the cord loops. If necessary, pop the balloon inside to deflate.
