How to Steam Fish in a Ziploc Bag

Fish is an excellent source of lean protein, and the USDA recommends that we eat at least two 3-oz. servings per week. Additionally, cold-water fish like salmon are an excellent source of heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish is also relatively easy to prepare and has a short cook-time, making it ideal for quick meals on the go. Recently, the Ziploc company came out with bags designed for use in the microwave, which steams the food, eliminating the need for excess oils. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Large Ziploc Zip 'n' Steam bag
  • 4 6- to 8-oz. boneless/skinless salmon fillets
  • 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

    • 1

Place fish on a large plate or platter.

    • 2

Crush the garlic and combine with the lemon juice and olive oil; add salt and pepper to taste.

    • 3

Brush the lemon juice mixture over onto both sides of the fish fillets. If you don't have a pastry brush, pour the mixture over the fish, using your hands to ensure total coverage.

    • 4

Place fish in Ziploc bag, in an even layer--do not overlap pieces. Pour any remaining lemon juice mixture into the bag.

    • 5

Seal the bag, lay flat in microwave and cook, on high, for 5 minutes.

    • 6

Let bag stand for 1 minute, then open, serve and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • This recipe also works well with telapia or any other fish of your choice. If using frozen fish, cook on high for 9 minutes.

  • It's best to use the Ziploc bags specifically designed for microwave cooking. Regular storage bags may be too thin and can melt in the microwave. Open the bag carefully, there will be a lot of hot steam. Microwave ovens may vary; these instructions are for an 1100 watt microwave.
