Decide what size luggage you need. If you will be traveling internationally a larger bag will be needed, but for quick weekend trips a small to medium-sized bag is ideal.

Choose the bag style based on its specific purpose. For quick business trips a rolling garment bag may be ideal; most other travel would warrant a standard rectangular suitcase. If you hike or are going on an extended international trip a rolling duffle or a large backpack may be best.

Evaluate durability based on your preferences. A hard case may be best if you are concerned about smashing items inside. The structure of the soft-sided bag should be somewhat firm and sturdy enough to withstand being stacked without being crushed.

Pay attention to extras within the bag. Pockets on the inside and outside as well as detachable, inner toiletry bags can be helpful in staying organized when you pack.

Choose strong, heavy-duty zippers. Thoroughly look over the sliders and the chain carefully. Check the area where the zipper has been sewn into the bag and give it some tugs. Make sure there are no loose threads or unraveling.

Pull out the handle and make sure it fits nicely with your height and is comfortable to pull.

Check out the wheels and all places where they are secured to the bottom of the bag. Pay special attention to this with swivel-wheel bags.

Pick up the bag and test the weight. If you are often close to going over your weight limit when packing you'll want a lighter suitcase.
