Crystal glasses require special care and cannot be handled or cleaned like regular glasses. Improper handling of these fragile glasses can lead to shattering. Many crystal glasses also contain lead which can lead to leaching, especially in wine. Keeping them as mostly decorative pieces may be a good idea for health reasons. It's the lead oxide that gives crystal its beautiful sparkling shine so it's a trade off of aesthetics for functionality.
