Things You'll Need:
- Plumb bob
- Tarp
- Saw
- Roof jack
- Roof mastic
- Sheet-metal screws
- Power drill
- Starter plate
- Double-wall pipe
- Silicone sealant
- Storm collar
- Vent cap
- Conduction pipe
-
Step 1
Suspend a plumb bob from the ceiling over the center of the heater's draft hood. Mark the location on the ceiling. Cover the heater with a tarp and cut a 5 or 6-inch diameter hole in the ceiling.
-
Step 2
Repeat step one from the attic space. Mark the roof sheathing. Cut the hole in the roof at least 2 inches in diameter larger than the double wall vent you are using.
-
Step 3
Go up on the roof and slide the roof jack under the shingles until the jack hole is centered over the roof hole. Use a marker to trace the exposed outline of the jack on the roof shingles. Then slide the jack out.
-
Step 4
Punch four holes along each edge of the jack and coat the bottom with roof mastic. Slide the jack back in place and screw it down along the edges. Cover the screw heads with mastic.
-
Step 5
Install the starter plate in the ceiling. The installation instructions vary depending on the model and manufacturer of the starter plate, so consult those instructions to install the plate correctly.
-
Step 6
Run the double-wall pipe from the starter plate up through the roof jack. Consult the manufacturer's installation guidelines to see how far above the roof you need to terminate the pipe.
-
Step 7
Seal the joint of the roof jack and pipe with silicone. Then slide the storm collar over the pipe and seal that joint with silicone. Top the pipe with the cap.
-
Step 8
Cut the vent connector to size. Insert one end into the double-wall vent pipe and the other into the water heater. If necessary, use an adapter bushing to fit the connector into the vent pipe.
