How to Remove Camera Shine With Adobe Photoshop Tutorial

Camera shine can be caused by either an on-camera flash or by strong lighting. It puts an unnatural and unflattering shine into the photograph, especially in people's faces. There are several techniques to remove camera shine, including plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop. Here's how to get started.

Try the Clone or Healing tool. Either one will help to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the quality of the photo and the tones and textures near the shine spots. To use the Clone Stamp tool, select it from the side toolbar and choose a brush size from the brushes palette. In general, the bigger the brush, the smoother the clone. Using the Option (Alt) key, select an area close in tone and texture to the affected area. Then use the Clone tool to replace the area.

Try replacing the color. The Paintbrush tool in the side toolbar can be switched to the Color Replacement tool. Click and hold the Paintbrush tool and you will find options for the Color Replacement brush. To use this, do exactly as you did with the Clone tool: Hold the Option (Alt) key while selecting the color you want to use to replace the area affected by camera shine.

Use the Variations palette from the Image>Adjustments submenu. Variations allow you to control shadows and highlights as well as colors and midtones. It also gives you a series of images that allow you to visually compare variations of the photo.

Try a plug-in such as ShineOff from Image Trends software. It has a filter (and shows up on the Filter menu after installation) that reduces or eliminates camera shine. It has some basic controls for the user. There are other such plug-ins as well.

Desaturate the photo so it is a grayscale image. You have more control over tones, including camera shine, in grayscale, if you don't mind having a finished black-and-white photo.
