How to Draw a Spiral Staircase in Perspective

Perspective drawing can make your drawings much more realistic, as well as adding depth. Drawing a spiral staircase in perspective can seem like a difficult task. However, if you stick to single-point perspective, you can accomplish the image with relative ease. Once you master a spiral staircase in single-point perspective, you can attempt other perspective drawings.

• Paper
• Pencil
• Black-ink pen
• Eraser
• Ruler

1. 

   Using a pencil, draw the vanishing point (the point toward which all the lines congregate and recede) in the middle bottom portion of the page. Draw nine straight lines extending from the vanishing point. These lines will act as "perspective guard rails" and help you keep everything in proportion.

2. 

   Add a spiral curve that starts near the left side of the vanishing point. Curve this line around out from the vanishing point until the line goes off the top-right side of the paper. Add another spiral parallel to the first one to complete the guideline for the staircase.

3. 

   Draw small curves around the outside of the spiral stair case. These curves will be the guidelines for the brick wall. Add windows that are in perspective by drawing a straight line up from the vanishing point. Draw another line beside this and connect the top and bottom with a curved line.

4. 

   Add the steps with lines that line up with the vanishing point. You can do this by lightly tracing your pencil from the vanishing point to the step and then firmly drawing a line for the step.

5. 

   Add lines for the vertical seams in the bricks in the same manner that you added the staircase lines.

6. 

   Erase all of the guidelines and the vanishing point. Ink the entire drawing. Let the ink dry. Erase the pencil.

Tips & Warnings

• Lay a ruler out on the page to make sure the lines head toward the vanishing point.

• Be careful not to smudge your picture when erasing the pencil.
