Step 1
Keep your animal well-groomed. Dandruff is a telltale sign of flaky skin, so bathing your animal regularly will stop dandruff from accumulating. Use warm water to bathe your animal. A mild shampoo (such as baby shampoo) will usually work to rid your pet of dandruff. Make sure to massage the shampoo thoroughly to the animal's skin. Brush or comb your animal more often as well. This will remove dandruff and loose fur.

Invest in pet dandruff shampoo if regular baby shampoo doesn't work. The shampoo should have sulfur or salicylic acid in it. These shampoos can be found in most pet stores. Read the manufacturer's instructions on the shampoo and follow them. Avoid shampoos with insecticides (flea shampoo). These types of shampoos will dry out your animal's skin and make dandruff worse.

Step 3
Use moisturizers for your pet. Some good, safe moisturizers are oatmeal soap, moisturizing lotions (such as human hand lotion), or an oil rinse (most pet stores will have this). All of these products will help lubricate your pet's skin.

Invest in a good pet brush. The bristles should be soft enough so that you can brush the back of your hand and it not hurt. Make sure to use this brush often, as it will distribute your pet's natural oils more evenly over his body.

Invest in good pet food. Many generic pet foods will not have the necessary vitamins and minerals to keep your pet, and his skin, healthy. Some vitamin supplements can be used as well, but these differ between pets. Consult your vet to see what type of supplement to purchase, or if you should even use one on your pet.
