You can add a touch of oriental elegance to your décor by making one or more silk pillows. Using a square or round pillow form provides the smoothest finished look. Another option is to sew silk fabric into a tube shape, stuff it with fiberfill and secure the ends with ribbons to create a quick bolster pillow. Make several pillows in an assortment of sizes, shapes and coordinating colors to toss onto a couch or bed. The instructions below are for a pillow using a square pillow form.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Foam pillow form
  • Silk fabric
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Four drapery tassels
  1. Step 1

Hold a tape measure on one seam of the pillow form. Bring the tape measure across the top to the opposite seam, without pulling too tightly. Note the measurement and add 1 ¼ inches. Cut two squares of fabric to the size of this measurement.

  2. Step 2

Pin the loop at the top of a tassel to each corner of one fabric square on the right side of the fabric. Place the tassels so that the free, dangling edges point inward toward the center of the square. The loops at the top of the tassels should lie across the edge of the fabric, and the gathered knot of each tassel should be at least ½-inch away from the edge of the fabric. The length of the loops that you leave pointing inward on the fabric square will determine how loosely the tassels will hang on the outside after the pillow is sewn. Pin the dangling part of the tassels to the center of the fabric to hold in place temporarily.

  3. Step 3

With right sides together, lay the second fabric square on top of the first. The tassels are sandwiched between the two squares. Pin seams to hold in place, then sew three sides, using ½-inch seams. Sew around the corners of the seam that is being left open just enough to catch the tassels.

  4. Step 4

Turn the pillow right side out. Unpin the tassels to allow them to hang freely. Tug lightly on the tassels to pull the corner fabric out forming points.

  5. Step 5

Insert the pillow form through the open seam.

  6. Step 6

Pin the open end of the fabric square closed, folding raw edges under ½-inch. Using a hand needle and thread, sew the seam closed.
