Your hot tub's foam cover performs an important function. It retains heat and protects the water from dirt and debris. When the cover gets wet, cracks or develops other problems that make it unfit for use, you'll need to select a replacement. The foam hot tub cover can be replaced by following a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Choosing a Replacement Foam Hot Tub Cover

  1. Step 1

Determine whether your foam hot tub cover actually needs to be replaced. These types of covers do not last forever because they are constantly exposed, to heat, chemicals and moisture. If water is getting into the cover and the foam is waterlogged, or if there are visible cracks, it needs to be replaced.

  2. Step 2

Determine the environmental conditions to which your foam hot tub cover will be exposed. This will determine the type of replacement cover you select. Are you in a warm climate, or are there freezing winters with snow? Do you live in a rainy climate? Is there intense sunlight, and will the cover be exposed or under a gazebo or other covering? The foam needs to be thicker in cold climates and for exposed hot tubs. A covered tub in a temperate climate might have an inch to and inch-and-a-half of foam. An exposed tub in a cold, harsh climate needs 4 to 6 inches.

  3. Step 3

Measure your old cover to be sure what size to order.

  4. Step 4

Comparison shop. Visit spa stores and search online vendors. Different companies may offer special features such as handles with extra stitching or more secure locks. Don't pay extra for these features unless you truly need them. When you compare prices between stores and online vendors, be sure to figure in shipping and handling fees.

  5. Step 5

Order your cover. Be sure to double-check the measurements and specifics before finalizing the order. If the cover is the wrong size or the foam is the wrong thickness, you will be stuck with it once it arrives.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prolong the life of your replacement foam hot tub cover with proper care. Clean it regularly, and don't allow children or pets to sit or walk on it. Use a lifter rather than handles; it's rare that the built-in handles can take the weight over time without tearing.
