How to Make a T-shirt Line
-
1
Design the T-shirt. What is your idea, and why will it sell T-shirts? There has to be an element that makes your T-shirts stand out among the thousands of T-shirts already on the market. You could do this by creating a popular or funny slogan. If you're an artist, you might offer a line of T-shirts with reproductions of your most popular pieces on the T-shirts. You need something on the T-shirts that will attract consumer interest. If you don't have something original, try licensing the right to use someone else's work. Maybe you can even strike a deal for the licensing rights on a share-of-the-profit basis.

Find a wholesaler where you can purchase good-quality blank T-shirts in a variety of colors in quantity (see Resources). Blank T-shirts at a price that will allow you to enjoy a healthy markup are essential to the success of you T-shirt line. Pay attention to the quality of the shirts you purchase. You don't want the success of your wonderful designs at the mercy of cheap T-shirts. Before you settle on the T-shirts you'll use, buy a few test shirts and put them through multiple washings to see how they hold up.

Decide whether you will produce the T-shirts yourself or license them to another company. If you produce them yourself at home, you may have trouble meeting high demand if your T-shirts become popular. Manufacturing the T-shirts yourself means you'll keep all the profits, so you can always hire someone to help out. If you license your T-shirt line to a large company, the company will pay you a licensing fee. The licensing fee would be substantial, but a successful T-shirt line could net you more profit over the long run if you handle the manufacturing. Licensing, however, means less work on your end. Either way, a line of T-shirts backed with a good idea is a business venture worth pursuing.
