Test a Car Alarm When the Car Will Not Start

You can test car alarms in the same manner regardless of the type or make of the car. The auxiliary electrical component of newer cars are powered by capacitors, which hold power in store for use whether the car will start or not. Cars without capacitor storage rely on the battery. If a dead battery is keeping such a car from starting, the alarm will not work. Yet if the battery has power, or if the car uses capacitors, the alarm should still be active.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the keyless entry remote. Press the "lock" button on the remote. If it chirps and locks the doors, then it's quite likely the alarm is active.

    • 2

Unlock a door and get into the car. Lock the doors from inside with the remote. Leave the key out of the ignition.

    • 3

Unlock the door by hand and open it. That will set off the alarm if it is active. Stop the alarm with the remote, if necessary. If the alarm does not sound, then it is not working to protect your car.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the alarm is still not functioning after the car is repaired and running, take it to an auto electrical technician for analysis.
