How to Hook Up a Scanner to a Computer

A scanner is a handy tool for converting pictures and documents to digital format. Hooking one up to a computer is a simple process, provided certain basic procedures are followed and the manufacturer's instructions are read.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Read the instructions. Every scanner will come with a set of instructions detailing its connections and its features. Before attempting to connect any hardware, read the instructions.

  2. Step 2

    Find out how the scanner connects to the computer. A scanner can connect to a computer through a USB port or a SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) port.

  3. Step 3

    Turn the computer off and connect the scanner to the proper port on the computer.

  4. Step 4

    Plug the scanner in and turn on the computer. The computer should detect the scanner and indicate that it has found new hardware.

  5. Step 5

    Use the software that came with the scanner in the appropriate disk drive. Follow the instructions provided.
