Divide a piece of paper in half, and label each half with an answer to your question. An example would be "yes" and "no." Tie the object onto the string, and hold the loose end of the string between your forefinger and thumb of the hand you write with. Rest your elbow on the table, and hold the string so your pendulum hangs 1 inch above the paper. Hold it perfectly still, and wait. The pendulum will begin to swing toward one of the answers on your paper. This will be the answer you are looking for.

If the pendulum doesn't swing, that means none of the answers are the correct answer. You can use a pendulum with no paper. If the pendulum swings clockwise, the answer is yes; if counterclockwise, the answer is no.
