How to Shrink a Fitted Cotton Hat

Cotton hats offer comfort and warmth on a cold winter's day. However, sometimes it is difficult to find one that fits correctly. This can be especially difficult if the cotton hat is fitted. In addition to running the risk of losing the garment, a loose-fitting hat can fall over the eyes, making it hard to see clearly. While you might be able to tailor a cotton-fitted hat, shrinking it to fit is a much quicker and easier option. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hat in a washing machine, and set the water temperature to hot.

    • 2

Allow the hat to run through the entire wash cycle.

    • 3

Remove the hat from the washing machine and place it in the clothes dryer. Set the dryer to the highest heat setting.

    • 4

Run the dryer for several minutes. Take out the hat and see if it has achieved the desired fit.

    • 5

Repeat the drying process until the appropriate fit is achieved.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a close watch on the dryer cycle. Cotton can shrink very quickly. Take the hat out and give it a test fit often. If the hat is still wet but it has achieved the appropriate size, allow it to air dry.
