If you are looking for a fun and engaging activity for children, try having them create their own Pokemon character. Pokemon is one of the most popular cartoon franchises today, and part of the popularity can be attributed to Pokemon's unique character designs. Creating your own Pokemon is easy, as long as you understand how issues such as species and powers influence how characters are drawn.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil Paper Colored pencils or crayons
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of Pokemon you want to draw. There are several different species, such as electric, fire, water, grass, poison and psychic. The species of the Pokemon often factors prominently into the drawing of the character. A grass-type Pokemon may have leaves, for example, while a water Pokemon may have fins.

  2. Step 2

Decide what other strengths your Pokemon will have and build them into your character. Decide if your Pokemon be able to fly, which would require wings, or have a powerful bite. Deciding on key strengths helps you make design decisions.

  3. Step 3

Select a feature or features to exaggerate. Many Pokemon characters have exaggerated features, such as a giant tongue, large ears or enormous lips. This helps give them their cartoon-ish appearance. The exaggerated feature may be connected to a particular Pokemon's species or powers, but this is not necessary.

  4. Step 4

Add some color. Pokemon characters often feature bright colors--especially pastels--and are sometimes accented with more earthy tones. Pokemons that seem to be made from rock or metal are prominent exceptions.
