MSN email (a.k.a. Hotmail) is a free, Web-based email service offered by Microsoft. It offers 5GB of storage, a calendar feature, and the ability to see all your email accounts--Hotmail and others--in one place. The free service is a light version of Hotmail; there is a Hotmail Plus, which is a paid subscription version, and it has more features.

Open your Web browser and navigate to msn.com. Depending if you have previously personalized the page, you'll get the content that you specified when you configured your MSN preferences. Click on the Hotmail link in the upper left corner of the page, right below the MSN logo.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "Sign up" button on the lower left-hand side of the page to create a new MSN email account. Even if you already possess an MSN account, you can still sign up for another one here.

Create your email address, which is on the page Create your Windows Live ID. You will have to come up with an ID that is unique, something that might be difficult, because all of the good ones are taken. The best thing is to put some numbers after your name, as in joesmith918, for example.

  4. Step 4

Fill out the rest of the form, and click on the "I accept" button. Then you'll be directed to your Windows Live page. Here, you'll be able to configure your settings, including establishing your network with friends on Windows Live, managing your photos and creating your profile.

  5. Step 5
    Your MSN inbox

Manage your account with as much attention as any other email account. If you're using this only as a secondary email account, given out to marketers and potential spammers, then make sure you purge your inbox on a regular basis to avoid exceeding your storage limits.
