Salmon, trout and steelhead readily bite on the bait of salmon eggs. When used properly the eggs can be one of the most effective baits for these types of fish. It is best to use this method of baiting fish during spawning season. And, there are two prominent methods for using salmon eggs in fishing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing rod Reel Line Size 5 ESB bobber Size 10 hook Salmon eggs Nylon mesh String
  1. Step 1

For smaller fish, such as brook trout or chinook, use a single egg. Pierce one edge with the hook.

  2. Step 2

Push the egg up the shank then turn it so the egg sits over the hook, usually a 180-degree turn.

  3. Step 3

Push the egg back down the shank securing it over the point of the hook, keeping it firm in position. This rig can be used without a bobber in shallow water fishing.

  4. Step 4

For larger trout and salmon, use a cluster of salmon eggs called a spawn chunk. Place the chunk in the mesh bag.

  5. Step 5

Float the bag under the bobber just above the hook. The bobber will keep the eggs just below the surface of the water to maximize opportunities.

Tips & Warnings
  • To help keep salmon eggs fresh, roll them in borax powder or soak them in a boric-acid solution.
  • Salmon eggs spoil quickly and will be ineffective in luring fish.
