Instructions

    • 1

Join Facebook, MySpace or another social networking site (Cre8buzz, Bebo, Tagged). Use your contacts to ask about the person you are hoping to find. Someone may know where she is.

    • 2

Send an email to relatives of the person you're looking for and ask them to help you get in touch with him.

    • 3

Try the base locator. If you know the base where the person is stationed, call information to get the number of the base operator. After you get the base operator, ask for the base locator. The locator can give you the phone number and address of any active-duty service member on the base.

Try the worldwide locators. Each branch of the military has a worldwide locator. Give the locator all the identifying information you have, such as the person's name, rank, Social Security number, date of birth, last known post, etc. In most cases, you will be charged $3.50 for the search. Each military branch has different guidelines for its locator service. See Resources for a link to the website, which gives more information, along with addresses and phone numbers.

Search social media sites. Several sites are devoted to those in the military: Military.com, Military Connections and GI Search. All are free to join and will let you search for the person you're looking for.

Tips & Warnings

  • The more you know about this person, the easier it will be to find him. Ask mutual friends for details if you can't recall them. Be patient. It may take some time for people to get back to you.
