1
Avoid washing your hair every day. Thick, wavy hair has a tendency to dry out easily, and the oils from your scalp can help alleviate this. Wash your hair every other day or every few days unless it appears oily or dirty. Use a conditioner and shampoo that is formulated for dry, wavy hair to help replenish the moisture your hair needs. For particularly dry hair, a serum or rub in conditioner formulated for your hair type can help add needed moisture.

Purchase a diffuser to use on your hairdryer. A diffuser will help to not over-dry your hair by making sure the heat is not concentrated on just one spot. Finger comb your hair while drying, as a comb or brush will stretch the individual hairs and cause them to become frizzy instead of laying with a natural wave. Avoid drying your hair completely as well, and turn of the hairdryer when your hair is still a little damp. Overly dry hair will become frizzy hair.

Braid your hair and secure with a hair tie before bed. This will keep your hair under control while you sleep no matter how much you toss and turn. It also helps to avoid stretching the hairs and prevents flat hair. If you braid the hair while it is still slightly damp, when you unbraid it in the morning, you will find your hair has been trained into soft waves by the braid itself. If your hair still is out of control in the morning, leave it braided or clip it up in a hair clip.

Wear your hair in layers, as they help thin out and tame the waves. Avoid short styles, as this may turn your hair curly since you will not have the weight of your hair pulling the curls into waves. Communicate clearly with your stylist about what you want and the challenges you are facing with your hair, but also be prepared to listen to her advice.
