How to Get a Salon Quality Blowout
-
1
Start with damp hair. Your hair will take a very long time to blow dry if you start with sopping wet hair, so make sure your hair is damp, but not soaked. To achieve this you can either let your hair air dry to the point where it's damp, or you can take sections of your hair and use the blow dryer to get them dry. Remember, you aren't looking to style the hair or get it smooth at this point; you just want to remove moisture from the hair so you have damp hair to work with.

2
Work about a dime size of shine serum through your damp hair. This will seal off the hair's cuticle and give you smooth, shiny hair once it's dry. A dime size of serum will work for short to medium hair lengths, but be sure to add a bit more if your hair is especially long or thick.

Section your hair off into 3 to 5 chunks. You can do this with the help of hair clips or pins; use whatever you have on hand. Sectioning your hair into even chunks is crucial because it allows you to work all the way around the head without being overwhelmed. Short hair can be worked into 3 chunks (two on either side and one at the crown), while medium to long hair should be divided into 5 chunks. For the latter, section hair into two chunks at either side, one at the crown, and two at the back.

Start with the bottom layers first. You want to work your way up to the crown of the head, leaving the top of your hair for last. Starting at the root, pull your hair straight using the metal barrel brush, gently turning the brush at the ends of the hair to create volume. The larger the barrel of your brush, the straighter and fuller your hair will be, so choose your hair tool accordingly. Continue this method of pulling your hair straight using the barrel brush, gently lifting at the roots and following to the ends of the hair. Starting with damp hair will allow your hair to dry more quickly than if you start with soaking wet locks. Remember to always point the nozzle of the blow dryer down to seal the hair's cuticle and prevent frizz.

Finish up with a shot of cold air from your blow dryer. The shot of cold air will help create a smooth, polished look for your blowout. Blowing your hair out will take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the length of your hair and how thick it is. Practice makes perfect, and a good blowout can last anywhere from 1 to 4 days. After your hair is finished, do your best not to touch it because that can cause frizz and force your blowout to fall flat.
