How to Change a Flat Tire on a Tandem Wheel Trailer

Vacationing can be very fun, but when you least expect it you may get a flat on your trailer or RV mobile home. With the tires being on a special tandem axle support system, you are unable to jack the axle up as you usually do on a vehicle because the springs just bend up rather than the trailer raising. With a few special techniques you can change a flat tire on a tandem wheel trailer with ease.

Things You'll Need

  • 2' 2"x6" Piece of wood 2' 2"x10" Piece of wood 2 2-1/2" Wood screws Phillips head screwdriver Tire wrench 6 ton Hydraulic jack
  • Lay the 2 x 6 on the floor. Center the 2 x 10 lengthwise on top of the 2 x 6; there should be a two-inch gap on each side. Screw the wood screws through each end on the top of the 2 x 10. Flip the piece over.

  • Slide the wooden tire block you made (2 x 10 side down) in front of a good tire that is right next to the flat tire.

  • Crack all the nuts loose with the tire wrench on the flat tire, but don't unscrew them all the way (just break them free from the rust lock you usually experience while taking a tire off).

  • Connect a truck to the trailer. Have a friend watch for when the wooden block is completely under the good tire. Drive the truck forward until the good tire, that is right next to the flat tire, is centered on top of the wooden block you made.

  • Unscrew the nuts on the flat tire completely. If you are having trouble pulling the tire off, you may center the hydraulic jack under the axle directly behind the flat tire and raise it a bit more. First, lock the hydraulic jack piston by turning the valve on it clockwise. Push the handle up and down on the jack, raise the axle a bit more, and pull off the tire.

  • Place a new tire on the axle. Tighten the lug nuts. Slowly release the jack by turning the valve on it counter-clockwise.

  • Drive the truck backwards to get the good tire off of the wooden block. Tighten the lug nuts again until it becomes hard to turn the tire wrench. Place the wooden block in a safe place for use again for your next flat.
