Make Concrete Patio Tiles

Concrete patio tiles and paving stones are a classic way to add visual interest to your patio or garden. Store-bought pavers can be expensive, and your choice is limited. By following the directions below, you can make your own concrete patio tiles and lay them over an existing concrete slab to make it once again attractive and new looking.

From Quick Guide: Concrete Patio Pavers Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Concrete tile mold Concrete mix Water 5-gallon bucket Mold release spray Concrete trowel Concrete pigment (optional)
  1. Step 1

Prepare your mold by treating it with the mold release spray. Then, in the bucket, mix the concrete with water, following the directions on the bag. You want the mix to be stiff but pourable with the help of your trowel. If you would like tinted concrete for your tiles, you may add the concrete pigment when you are mixing.

  2. Step 2

Set your mold on a flat surface. There will be concrete spills, so you may want to use a drop cloth under the mold to catch them. Pour the concrete into the mold, then smooth the top with your trowel. Let the tile set up for 48 hours.

  3. Step 3

To release the tile from the mold, turn it upside down and gently tap it until the tile pops out. Set the tile aside and allow it to cure for another two days before laying.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can press pretty stones or other decorative elements into your concrete tiles before they set up. Make or purchase several molds so you can make more than one tile at a time. Cover your tiles while curing to keep debris from settling on the concrete.
  • Wear gloves and other protective equipment while working with concrete.
