When installing recessed lights, be sure you are using the correct fixture for the job. If you have insulation in your ceiling, only use lamps that have an "IC" designation on them. "IC" stands for "insulation contact," which means the lamps can be safely covered by insulation without risk of fire. You can also buy airtight fixtures; these lamps prevent warm air from escaping into your attic during the winter.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drop cloths Drywall saw Drill Screwdriver Voltage tester Wire cutter/stripper Pliers Insulated wire nuts NM connectors
  1. Step 1

Cover your furniture and appliances with drop cloths to keep off the plaster dust. Locate and mark the positions of your ceiling joists.

  2. Step 2

Use the template that comes with your lights to draw the openings on your ceilings. Cut the openings in your ceiling using a drywall saw or jigsaw.

  3. Step 3

Drill holes through your joists for the electrical cable. Turn off power to the circuit and run the cable from your switch through to the first light location.

  4. Step 4

Insert 8 to 12 inches of the cable running from the switch into the first light-junction box. Insert 8 to 12 inches of next piece of cable (the cable that will run to the next light) into the same light-junction box. Fasten the cables to the box with NM connectors. Splice the three white wires together, as well as the three black wires and the three grounds. Cover the splices with wire nuts.

  5. Step 5

Run the cable through to the next light, then install the first light into the ceiling. Rotate the lamp until it is securely fastened to the drywall. Attach the trim and insert the bulb.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the remaining lights. Restore power to the circuit and test your installation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy an inexpensive drywall circle cutter if you are installing several lights in a finished ceiling. Keep insulation at least 3 inches away from non-IC fixtures.
  • Do not use bulbs that exceed the recommended wattage for your lights.
