How to Use a Gas Log Fireplace

Gas log fireplaces have several advantages over traditional wood fires. They provide the same warmth and atmosphere as a wood fire, but can be turned on or off in a matter of seconds. A gas log fireplace does not need the same kind of ventilation as a wood fire because it produces no smoke. Even if you have never used a gas log fireplace, operating one is easy. Instructions

    • 1

Look at the front of the gas log fireplace for a metal tag or sticker. Gas logs that require venting will be labeled. If the gas log needs to be vented, open the damper. If the gas log is vent-free make sure there is a carbon monoxide detector installed and operating in the same room.

    • 2

Open any glass doors closing the gas log inside the fireplace. Make sure there are no flammable objects (such as furniture) directly in front of the fire.

    • 3

Look for the ignition and flame controls. Some gas logs have controls directly on the unit while others operate by remote control or a switch mounted on the wall or in the fireplace. A dial control will increase or decrease the flame, and may also ignite the fire. Turn up the dial. If the flame does not ignite, turn the dial back to the "off" position and wait a minute for the gas to dissipate.

    • 4

Look for "IGN" or "Ignite" on the dial control. Turn the dial to ignite and push the labeled button. A small flame should appear. Turn the dial up to increase the flame.

    • 5

Light the flame manually. If there is not an electronic ignition, look for a small metal tube inside the gas log. Turn the control to "ignite" or "low." Use a long match or lighter to light the flame. Turn up the control to increase the flame.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a fireplace screen to reduce the chance of pets or children getting too close to the flame.

  • Never leave a gas log fireplace unattended while it is lit. Turn off the gas log when you go to bed.
