How to Build a Projector Box

If you want a secure place for your video projector, you can build a projector box to replace whatever shelf or table it sits on now. The projector box can fit onto you ceiling where it will be out of the way of everything else. Before building, you need to pick a spot that the box and projector can be and still project your videos onto whatever screen you use. Then design and build a box that gives the projector plenty of room to operate. It needs plenty of ventilation because of its fan.

Instructions

    • 1

Look over the layout of your TV room. Determine the best spot that the projector box can hang from the ceiling and project the video onto your wall or screen. Make sure the projector can send a clear image from that spot.

    • 2

Design and sketch out a box that is big enough to not only hold the projector but allow for air circulation around it. It should be longer and wider than the projector by about 6 to 8 inches and 4 to 5 inches higher. The front end will be open for the projector to shine the image out to the wall.

    • 3

Cut the pieces for the box out of plywood at least 3/4 inch thick. The back piece needs a hole to slip the projector's power cord through. The top of the box doesn't need to be solid; it just needs wood supports to attach to the ceiling. Assemble the box by nailing or gluing the pieces together.

    • 4

Design a front flap for the box if you want one to close off the projector when it's not in use. Cut another piece the size of the front end, and cut an inch or two off the top of that. Glue or nail the small piece to the top of the box's front end. Attach the larger piece with hinges on the bottom end. Attach a latch where the two front pieces meet to hold this flap in place.

    • 5

Paint the box any color you want.

    • 6

Attach the box to the ceiling by screwing it into the ceiling joists. If you don't have joists in the right position, attach a ledger board to the joists closest to each end of the box to bridge them together, and screw the box into the board.

    • 7

Insert the projector into the box, running the power cord through the hole in the back. Make sure the projector is positioned to project the video image onto your blank wall or video screen.
