How to Make Buttons
You can use button for many different projects. From doll eyes, to clothing, to jewelry, buttons can add flair and beauty to anything you put them on. If you have ever wanted to make your own buttons, but did not know where to begin, you can make buttons easily using plasticine Sculpey clay. Sculpey clay does not need to be kiln fired, and can be baked in an oven in a few minutes. Here is how to make your own buttons.

Roll out your clay. You can use any colors you want for your buttons, or combine them together to make a multicolored button. Once you have chosen which colors to use, roll out your clay into a long snake-like roll, the diameter of the buttons you want to make. Using a butter knife, cut off the end of the roll repeatedly. These discs that you cut off will be your buttons. Smooth out any rough edges and smooth out the surface of the button so that it has a nice appearance.

Poke the holes. Using a toothpick, poke holes in your round disc so that you can sew the button onto projects. You can poke 2 or 4 holes, making them small or large. If you make your holes too small you may not be able to sew the holes easily, so make sure your holes are large enough to fit a needle through.

Bake your buttons. Once you are finished designing your buttons, bake them in your oven. Sculpey has instructions on the packaging for cooking temperatures and times. Lay your buttons out on a cookie sheet so that they are not overlapping. As a rule of thumb, bake the button at 150 degrees for 8 minutes, and check on them to see if they are hard. If they are still slightly soft, continue to bake them for 2 more minutes, or until they are hard.

Allow the buttons to cool before using them.
