How to Put Studs in a Leather Jacket

Making your own studded leather jacket gives you the freedom to create a custom pattern that fits your needs exactly. You can also use the same technique to add studs and spikes to other leather items like bags and belts. Use studs with paint to create a special custom design. Installing studs on leather is fairly easy to do and doesn't require any special equipment. Just take your time and work carefully to avoid making a mistake on an expensive leather jacket.

Things You'll Need

• Studs or spikes Craft knife (X-Acto knife) Chalk

Instructions

1. Use chalk to lightly mark out the locations for your studs.

2. Make holes for the studs with an X-Acto or similar knife. The studs will not be sharp enough to push through the leather without a pre-cut hole.

3. Press the prongs or post of the stud through the small hole you have made.

4. Fold the prongs back to secure them to the leather, or screw the back onto the post, depending on the type of studs you have.

5. Finish the jacket by repeating these steps for each stud.

Tips & Warnings

• Be careful when cutting through the leather, because it is thick.
